Comments: My father was a Marine Sgt onboard Washington. Not sure of exact timeframe, but your newsletter from 6 June 1942 mentions him (Neil A Vickery) and I have a Bluenose certificate for him from 30 Apr 1942 when the ship passed the Arctic Circle. Disappointed he's not listed in your Shipmate Bios. If anyone has any info on him I'd love to hear it, Thanks! Great website!

Comments: I am a retired Marine working in Manila American Cemetery. We have just under 54,000 American WWII Casualties either buried on site or memorialized if their body was not recovered. One of the names on our Wall of Missing is Fire Controllman 1st Class Duncan K Love jr. He died while a member of the crew on the USS Washington 11 April 1943. Is there any archives information or perhaps some shipmates in communication who might remember the circumstances of his death. His records do not show a Purple Heart but sometimes that is an ommission. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in founding out his cause of death. Thank You Bert Caloud

I work in Manila American Cemetery where he is memorialized. Does any of the membership alumi know or Association records show whether he was killed in action by an air attack or died in an on board accident. What was his cause of death. ACCORDING TO THE BOOK BATTLESHIP AT WAR, HER NICKNAME WAS THE "RUSTY W" HER FIRST DEPLOYMENT INTO THE PACIFIC WAS LONGER THAN THAT OF ANY BATTLESHIP, AND HER PAINT WAS IN VERY POOR CONDITION. WHEN SHE GOT BACK TO PEARL HARBOR,SHE HAD HER 1.1 QUADS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH EITHER 13 OR 15 40MM BOFORS QUADS.

Comments: I saw a man today wearing a USS Washington BB-56 ball cap. Respectfully I asked if he served on it to which he responded in the affirmative. Turns out he is Randall Moffitt, shipmate of BB-56. What a wonderful experience and such a delight to talk to him. He talked about the Japanese attacks at dusk in the Pacific, and the many torpedo attacks in the bitter cold of the North Atlantic in which he had to wear 3 sets of dress blues at the same time while he was inside the ship just to stay somewhat warm. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Moffitt and all who served and continue to serve protecting our country. Mr. Moffitt, is was truly an honor to speak to you. God Bless the Greatest Generation, and THANK YOU for serving. You are an American Treasure.

Comments: My father, Jesse W. Brown, was standing a bow watch when a shipmate came up to relieve him. Since the watch was to secure in a couple of hours, my father finished his watch and stood the remaining two hours for his fellow shipmate. He told his relief to go climb in his (my father's)rack and get some sleep. Shortly thereafter, the collision between the USS Washington and USS Indiana occurred. Had he allowed this man to relieve him, he would have been the one that was reported missing because they never found his shipmate after the collision.
