The Philadelphia Navy Yard at War

Since 1939, the Yard has repaired or outfitted over 1,100 fighting ships. It has built 46 new fighting ships over 300 feet, including 3 of the Nation's 10 mighty modern battleships, the USS WASHINGTON, USS NEW JERSEY and USS WISCONSIN two heavy cruisers, the USS LOS ANGELES and USS CHICAGO, 1 landing ship dock, 4 high speed transports, 4 destroyers, 1 seaplane tender, 1 large minelayer, 6 fighting destroyer escorts for the British and 12 for our Navy, 14 LST's (landing ship, tank), 2 aircraft carriers, the USS ANTIETAM and USS PRINCETON When V-J day came, the Yard was busily working on another super-battleship, the USS ILLINOIS, and "Philadelphia's own", the carrier USS VALLEY FORGE, two heavy cruisers, USS SCRANTON and USS NORFOLK.
