| The Yard has repaired and outfitted over 550 warships of five of the United Nations, including Great Britain, France and Brazil. Among these ships have been several battleships including HMS NELSON, several aircraft carriers and heavy cruisers; among the light cruisers have been the HMS MANCHESTER and FNS MONTCALM.
More than 500 warships constructed in the Delaware Valley have been outfitted and made ready for war here. Included among these were the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (Battleship "X"), two of the radical new battle cruisers, 9 aircraft carriers, 10 light cruisers and over 100 landing craft.
The Yard has produced in its shops more than 20 turrets for the 16 inch guns that are found on battleships and the 8 inch guns on heavy cruisers; 4500 propellers for almost every type of vessel in our Navy; 1,000 lifeboats and 500,000 life jackets; 300,000 fuel oil burner parts and 15,000,000 pounds of castings. It has also manufactured 6,000 mattresses per month.
Two drydocks, measuring 1,100 feet by 150 feet, among the largest in the world, were constructed to meet the requirements of the fleet expansion program.
The working force jumped from 5,000 in 1937 to over 41,000 prior to V-J day.
The power consumption of the Yard during this period increased from a total available capacity of 75,000 kw hours per day to 600,000 kw hours per day in 1945.
The Yard itself fabricated over 200,000 tons of steel.
A total of over $600,000,000 has been expended for ship work of all kinds.
The various schools in the Yard have turned out literally thousands of graduates, the boiler and oil burning school alone having trained 1200 officers, 8,000 enlisted men and 13,000 firemen. Over 135,000 officers and men were trained in chemical Warfare defense.
Navy Yard employees are proud of the record the ships built, converted or repaired here made on the Seven Seas.
The USS WASHINGTON, USS NEW JERSEY and the USS WISCONSIN will always remain closest to the hearts of the men and women who worked in this Yard throughout the war.
