JOHN HASKELL GIELE, SP(A)1/C, born Sept. 7, 1918, Dayton, OH, joined the USN Aug. 15, 1941,and was assigned to USS Washington December 1941, as bridge and main battery plot. He achieved the rank of SP(A) 1/2.

While at sea he participated in main battery gunnery, sinking Kirishima, etc.

His memorable experiences include North Atlantic duty with flag; Islands/battles in Pacific.

He was discharged Oct. 6, 1945 and received the usual end of war stuff.

Now retired as pistol range safety officer he is presently a fencing master/Coach. He has a son John Carr Giele, wife Jill and two granddaughters.

JAMES J. GLAVIANO, S1/C

JAMES J. GLAVIANO, S1/C, born Nov. 26, 1915 in Hickory, LA joined the USN, Nov. 18, 1940 and was assigned to the USS Washington March 6, 1941, stationed in the paint and chemical storeroom, Supply Div.

He was aboard for the Murmansk runs and the Third Battle of Savo which was his most memorable experience.

March 18, 1943 he was transferred to the Pacific Fleet Training Center, Pearl Harbor, HI. February 1945 he was discharged as storekeeper first class.

He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, EAME Campaign Medal and WWII Victory.

March 1946 he was hired at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, CA. His brother was the first Navy combat sailor stationed there and recommended him as someone who knew supply.

He married Donna Frederick February 1948. Twenty-five years later he retired as an engineering technician. After retirement he purchased a 20-acre almond orchard in Biggs, CA, which he has tended for 21 years. He has three daughters, five grandsons, four granddaughters, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.

GEORGE R. GREELEY, CAPT

GEORGE R. GREELEY, CAPT, born Jan. 18, 1918, Scranton, PA, received a BA degree from the University of Scranton in 1939. He enlisted in the USN in August 1941 and after midshipman training aboard USS Prairie State (IX-15) was commissioned ensign USNR on Jan. 16, 1942.

He served in the new battleship USS Washington (BB-56) for two and one half years as a communications officer, first in the Atlantic where Washington was part of a US - British force covering allied convoys to North Russia, and later in the Pacific in 1942 during the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, and in the third battle of Savo Island, a night action in which Washington sank the Japanese battleship Kirishima. Later he participated in carrier task force operations against the Japanese in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and the Marianas campaigns.

Following WWII, Lt. Greeley transferred to the regular Navy, completed a one year course at the General Line School, and served tours of duty in USS Wasp (CV-18), USS Shangri-La (CV-38), and USS Iowa (BB-61). In 1948 he was designated a special duty officer (Communications) and served tours of duty as O1C, US Naval Radio Station, Dupont. SC; OIC, US Naval Communications Unit #33; and CO, US Naval Communications Station, Adak, AK. He has served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel; the office of the Chief of Naval Operations; as director, Naval Security Group (Atlantic) on the staff of CINCLANTFLT during a period including the Soviet-Cuban missile crisis of 1962; the Naval Security Group Command; and three tours with the National Security Agency. After 30 years of active duty, he retired from the USN in August 1971.

Among his decorations, Capt. Greeley wears two Joint Service Commendation Medals from CINCLANT and DIRSNA, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/7 Battle Stars, and the EAME Campaign Medal w/Battle Star.

He married Catherine Crowley of Scranton, PA in 1945. His dear wife died in 1983. Their two children are Patricia A. Collins and George R. Greeley Jr. He has six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

WARREN P. GREENE, EM1/C

WARREN P. GREENE, EM1/C, born June 1, 1920 in Greensburg, TN, joined the USN, May 2, 1939,and assigned to the USS Washington May 1941.

He was stationed in after diesel room/after distribution. His memorable experiences include re mfg. wt. electric fire pump motors and promoted to first class.

His action while at sea includes convoys to Murmansk, Russie British Navy, Orkney Islands, battle Savo Island Nov. 14-15, 1942.

He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense and European Defense South Pacific. Greene received a medical discharge May 2, 1944.

He has four children, three girls and a boy. His wife is deceased. He is retired and now lives in Florida in the winter and Indiana in the summer.

ROBERT J. GRIBLER, MM3/C

ROBERT J. GRIBLER, MM3/C, born Nov. 29, 1918 in O'Fallon, IL, joined the USN Sept. 7, 1943. Sent to US Naval Training Station, Farragut, ID, Camp Hill, May 8, 1943 to Nov. 14, 1943. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station and attended Engineering School eight weeks and then sent to Bremerton Navy Yard to go aboard USS Washington. Feb. 23, 1944, as member of A Div., boat shop. He was in the Pacific Operations, crossed the equator and took part in Iwo Jima, Okinawa operations.

His memorable experiences include crossing the equator and initiation ceremony; he'll never forget Polywog to shellback; going through the Panama Canal.

Awarded Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation w/2 Stars, Asiatic-Pacific w/6 Stars and the American Area. Discharged Dec. 3, 1945 from Navy pier in Chicago. After discharge he went to work. Retired as tool & die maker on October 1981. He and his wife Jane live in O'Fallon, IL. They have five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. All the family lives in other states.
