ALEXANDER WARREN MATOUK, EM2/C

ALEXANDER WARREN MATOUK, EM2/C, born Aug. 10, 1923 of American parents in Argentina, joined the USN in August 1941. After boot camp in Norfolk, VA he was assigned to the USS Washington, 1st Div. under the watchful eye of Frank Remus, the most feared boatswains mate in the USN. Immediately made "Captain of the Head." Finally transferred to E Div., working in power gang, 1C room and galley. where he ate like a king. Remembers shoring up bulkhead after collision with USS Indiana. After embarrassing the chief engineer by obtaining electrical supplies from the South Dakota which they had refused him, he had him transferred to Landing Ship School Before leaving the ship he fell on the chow line, hurt his knee and wound up at St. Albans Naval Hospital.

He married Renee in 1948 and they have five children. He owned and operated a hearing aid business for 30 years. Now employed in real estate in Long Island, NY.

LOUIS D. MAURIELLO, QM1/C

LOUIS D. MAURIELLO, QM1/C, horn May 1, 1920 in Boston, MA, joined the USN March 25, 1942, assigned to the USS Washington June 1942, N Div. Later assigned to Adm. Lee staff as flag QM aboard USS Washington.

His memorable experience includes being stationed to control 2 in conning tower nights of Nov. 14-15 of 1942.

His actions at sea, all BB-56 actions from June 1942 through completion of Okinawa campaign.

He was discharged Nov. 18, 1945. Married to Jo losue May 11, 1958 and has three children: Angela Fiorentino, Louis Mauriello and Glen Mauriello and five grandchildren: Brandy Fiorentino, Loren, Amanda, Kyle Mauriello and Paige.

OSCAR H. MAUZY, RM3/C

OSCAR H. MAUZY, RM3/C, born Nov. 9, 1926 in Houston, TX, joined the USN in January 1994 and was assigned to the USS Washington at Bremerton, WA in April 1944 assigned to the I (eye) Div., after finishing radar school in Point Loma, CA in March 1944.

He was aboard in all actions from Operation Forager (Saipan) in June, 1944 to Okinawa bombardment in March, April and May, 1945. He stayed aboard For return to Philadelphia Navy Yard (Navy Day, 1945) and two cruises to and from England to return GI's From European Theatre to the states for discharge.

He was discharged at Hitchcock, TX in January 1946. Attended University of Texas, September 1946 until January 1952 on GI Bill, earning BBA (1950) and LLB (1952). Practiced law in Dallas, TX, 1952-1987. Elected state senator of Texas (23rd District) 1966-1986; elected Justice, Supreme Court of Texas 1987-1993.

Father of one daughter, Catherine Anne Mauzy, and two sons, Charles E. Mauzy and James S. Mauzy.

He married the former Anne Rogers Mauzy Feb. 14, 1976. Presently retired and reside at Crestway, Austin, TX.

BERNARD MAYOTTE, HMC

BERNARD MAYOTTE, HMC, born March 17, 1915, Webster, MA, attended boot camp, Newport, RI, Feb. 28, 1941. About a week after Pearl Harbor reported aboard the largest and most awesome ship he ever saw, the USS Washington (BB-56), H Div.

The most memorable and sad experience was taking care of two young seaman in sick bay and watching them succumb to spinal meningitis. Again surprised when muster was held to find out the man overboard was the commander of the American Fleet, Adm. Wilcox, and again holding on to his bunk when word was passed "standby for collision", the USS Washington rammed the USS Indiana midship.

Served 20 years in the USN and when it was time to reenlist he had two loves in his life, adventure excitement of the sea and his wife, loving, caring, understanding and his best friend. The choice was, what would you have done? Finally retired in 1980 as an optician.

CLEMENT P. MCCORMICK SR., CPM

CLEMENT P. MCCORMICK SR., CPM, born July 6, 1905 in Estherville, IA, joined the USN in 1940 and was assigned to the USS Washington in April 1941, in dispensary, Hospital Corps. He achieved the rank of CPM.

He reported aboard in April 1941 and stayed until April 1944. His memorable experiences include being aboard for Murmansk Run and the collision with the Indiana and Guadalcanal.

McCormick was discharged in 1955 and retired and moved to Hayward, CA. He died in March 1984 and his wife Olive died in January 1986. They had three children: Clement P. McCormick Jr., Lois Marie Johnson and Michael V. McCormick.

ROY O."MAC" MCCORMICK, SF1/C

ROY O."MAC" MCCORMICK, SF1/C, born June 16, 1915 in Denton, TX, joined the USN Dec. 14, 1934 and was assigned to the USS Washington Feb. 6, 1941. SF shop, shipfitter.

His action while at sea was repair 3 anchor detail, diver second class. His memorable experiences include deep sea diving.

He is married to Marie and now retired.

Update: Mac's wife Marie passed away in November 2003 and Mac died in November 2004. He is survived by his three children.
