DAVID S. NOE

DAVID S. NOE, born Aug. 11, 1924 in Morristown, TN, joined the USN August 1943, took his boot training at Great Lakes, IL, and was assigned to the USS Washington December 1943, 6th Div., five-inch gun turret.

He was aboard for most all major actions including the collision with the USS Indiana. Many bombardments and air attacks. His most memorable experience occurred when USS Washington rammed the USS Indiana.

He was discharged December 1945 and received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Ribbon w/8 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and American Service Ribbon.

Noe is retired from South Central Telephone and Telegraph Company. He married Grace Bailey, Aug. 7, 1945 and they have two daughters, Nancy and Gall and two grandsons, Justin and Timmy.

ANDREW R. "RAY" NOGAR

ANDREW R. "RAY" NOGAR, born Oct. 5, 1926 in Chicago, IL, joined the USN Oct. 22, 1943 and served in the 8th Div., 40mm trainer.

The encounter with a typhoon on Dec. 18, 1944 with the 3rd Fleet was truly memorable.

His action while at sea includes: Operation Forager, bombardment of Saipan and the Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 12 - July 7, 1944; air strikes on Palau Islands, July 25, 1944; Air strikes on Okinawa, Taiwan, Luzon and Visayan Islands, Oct. 10-21, 1944; Battles for Leyte Gulf, Oct. 24-27, 1944; Third Fleet's encounter with typhoon, Dec. 18, 1944; Air strikes on Taiwan and Okinawa, Jan. 3-9, 1945; Air strikes on Indochina, Canton, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Jan. 10 - 22, 1945; Air strikes on Tokyo, Feb. 16-18, 1945; Bombardment of Iwo Jima, Feb. 19-22, 1945; Air strikes on Kyushu, March 18-22, 1945; Bombardment of Okinawa, March 24, 1945; air strikes on Kyushu, March 29, 1945 and support of Okinawa operations, April I-May 28, 1945.

Upon discharge on April 16, 1946, he returned to Chicago, learned the trade of mold maker. Married to Lorraine Cremer (Kathy Nogar) and had one son, Dr. Nicholas Nogar, who died in August 1996. Nogar moved to Los Alamos, NM, was employed by the University of California at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and has been retired since 1990.

FRANK G. NOVAK, MM3/C, born May 18, 1925 in Detroit, MI, joined the USN in 1943 and was assigned to the USS Washington in 1943, engine room. He served in action 1943 - 1946 while at sea and achieved the rank of MM3/c.

His memorable experiences include the collision with the USS Indiana; sailing through the Panama Canal; sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge; Indiana repairs coming apart in the North Atlantic storm after war while bringing troops home from England.

Novak was discharged May 7, 1946 and died May 8, 1996. He is survived by a son, Greg Novak.

MYRON F. "MIKE" NUNN, S2C

MYRON F. "MIKE" NUNN, S2C, born at Independence, MO on Dec. 8, 1925, joined the USN July 9, 1943, and was assigned to the USS Washington, March of 1944 at Bremerton Navy Yard while she was drydocked, following the collision with the Indiana.

He was aboard from the bombardment of Saipan through the Okinawa campaign and earned eight Battle Stars and wears campaign ribbons for the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific (6), Philippine Liberation (2) and the Victory Medal. Served on 40mm anti-aircraft quad mounts in capacities from second loader to director operator.

Actions while at sea include: Saipan. Rota, Tinian bombardments; first and second battles of Philippine Sea, Marianas, Turkey Shoot, Iwo Jima and Okinawa bombardments.

His most memorable experience was observing the Japanese torpedo plane flying "on the deck" coming up the wake trying to drop its "fish" then banking to fly up the starboard side, being shot to pieces by those of them who had reached their battle stations in time. They were in the South China Sea at that time, January 1945. He was honorably discharged from the naval service at Lido Beach Long Island, NY on March 25, 1946.

Nunn retired after 32 years at Cessna Aircraft Co. in Wichita, KS. He is married to Wanda Sue Long, and has daughter to Michaele Van Hook, grandson, Toby E. Leavendusky and great-grand son. Toby J.

BENJAMIN DONALD ODOM, born a twin March 13, 1927 in Shelbyville, TN. He and his brother joined the USN in April 1945. Attended boot camp at Great Lakes and assigned to USS Washington June 1945. They served in the 4th Div. and soon learned the art of scrubbing decks, chipping paint and how to holy stone.

He remembers coming through the Panama Canal enroute to Philadelphia for Navy Day October 1945. At that time he left USS Washington and finished his duty on USS Ranger (CV-4). They were training pilots at NAS Pensacola, FL.

His brother, Marshall Dudley Odom was assigned shore duty at Newport News, VA. After he was discharged he attended college at Tenn. Tech on GI Bill and basketball scholarship.

After graduation he worked for Nashville gas company, Robert Shaw Controls Co. and in 1983 became a manufacturers rep. in the appliance industry. He is still active at work and playing golf. His brother died in 1977 of MS.

DANIEL J. OLSON

DANIEL J. OLSON, born Oct. 7, 1925 in Plainfield, NJ, joined the USN, Aug. 12, 1943. He attended boot camp at Great Lakes, IL and was assigned to USS Washington November 1943, where he became a member of the 6th Div. He did daily seamen duties, stood watch at battle stations in mount six. He participated in all the ship's naval actions from the Marshall Islands to Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

His most memorable experience was a kamikaze attack on the USS Franklin; Marianas Turkey Shoot; collision with the Indiana, Mog Mog and the typhoon.

He was honorably discharged March 21, 1946 and received eight Battle Stars, Asiatic-Pacific, American Defense and Philippine Liberation Medal w/2 Stars.

He was self-employed as a home appliance repairman. Married Anne Kucharski Jan. 22. 1949. They had a son Daniel, and a daughter, Merry Anne, seven grandsons and one granddaughter.
